Open Burning
VALID APRIL 6, 2026 THROUGH MAY 19, 2026 AUTHORIZATION TO CONDUCT OPEN BURN WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF CARSON CITY
This permit applies to all non-agricultural residents within the boundaries of Carson City. Persons participating in open burning activities do so at their own risk. The property owner may be held responsible for the costs of suppressing escaped or negligently uncontrolled fires. CCMC Title 14.02.010 provides that violations of this permit are a misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail and/or a maximum fine of $1,000.
Open Burn Regulations:
1. Fire shall be attended and controlled at ALL times by a competent adult (18 years-old minimum and who can communicate with public officers).
2. Residents who conduct burning during this open period are required to call the Carson City Fire Department Open Burn line at 775-283-4776 each and every day of the proposed burn. A recording will advise whether it is an authorized burn day or not. If it is an authorized burn day, burn may start at 8 a.m. and must be completely extinguished by 1 p.m.
3. Do not conduct burning during windy conditions. Cease burning should wind conditions exceed 5 mph.
4. The purpose of the open burn period is to provide residents an opportunity to dispose of accumulated weeds and yard debris only (i.e., weeds, limbs, leaves, etc.).
5. Burn in open area, at least 25 feet from any structure or other combustibles.
6. The burning of excessive amounts of vegetation is prohibited. Limit stacks to piles of 2 ft. high and 3 ft. in diameter. Piles must be at least 5 ft. distance from each other; burn one at a time to maintain control of the burn. Burning standing grass and weeds is prohibited.
7. Use of burn barrel or weed burner is prohibited at all times within the Carson City boundaries.
8. A garden hose attached to a pressurized water supply shall be IMMEDIATELY available and functional for emergency use.
